POTWs and other domestic wastewater treatment systems can be significant point sources of nutrients in aquatic environments. State environmental regulatory agencies are increasingly developing new or more stringent standards for nitrogen and phosphorus discharges to protect water quality. Wastewater treatment plants without tertiary treatment to remove nutrients may need to invest in new treatment systems. Plants that already remove nitrogen and phosphorus may need to achieve lower discharge concentrations or loadings, either by optimizing operations or by upgrading or replacing the treatment systems. Biological treatment to remove nitrogen and phosphorus is often more cost-effective than physical or chemical treatment technologies, with the added benefit of converting the contaminants into harmless compounds. 

POTWs sometimes experience operational difficulties with activated sludge systems, such as foaming, bulking, or poor settling. In these situations, a low food to microorganism ratio (F/M) may be promoting the proliferation of undesirable filamentous bacteria. BOD augmentation to increase the F/M ratio can resolve or prevent many such operational problems. BOD augmentation is also useful for sustaining biomass during seasonal periods of low flows or loadings, and for establishing the biomass during startup of new or upgraded biological treatment systems.

EOSi offers a variety of MicroC® formulations, delivery options and packaging to meet the needs of treatment plants of all sizes, from POTWs that serve tens of thousands of homes and businesses, to package plants that serve a small group of residences. For larger customers with full-scale chemical receiving, handling and storage capabilities, we can deliver any of our MicroC® products by tanker truck or in totes or drums of various sizes. For smaller customers, we can provide our non-hazardous MicroC® products in pails or drums on an as-needed basis.
