Meat & Poultry Processing

EOSi’s services and MicroC® premium carbon sources can help meat and poultry processors meet increasingly stringent requirements for biological nitrogen removal (BNR) and enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR). In both processes, MicroC® provides a readily available food supply to support the biomass while it carries out the desired biological nutrient removal processes, and the well-defined kinetic and yield characteristics of MicroC® also make it ideal for BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) augmentation.

EOSi’s goal is to maximize nitrogen and phosphorus removal from existing biological treatment systems, preferably through operational improvements instead of capital investments. If a processing plant needs to install new or upgrade existing wastewater treatment systems, EOSi can perform bench-scale treatability studies, modeling and simulations, and equipment selection and procurement for the carbon source supplementation program.

Power Generation

EOSi helps coal-fired power plant operators develop compliance strategies for pending nitrate and selenium limits in wastewater resulting from flue gas desulfurization (FGD) processes. MicroC® premium carbon sources provide a consistent, readily available source of food and energy to support the microbial populations needed for biological treatment of nitrate, nitrite, and selenium in FGD wastewater.

MicroC® is also used for BOD augmentation to sustain the biomass during periods of low flows or loadings due to seasonal variations or maintenance shutdowns, and for establishing an acclimated biomass during the starting of new or upgraded biological treatment systems. EOSi can conduct nutrient deficiency analyses and, if necessary, design a custom MicroC® blend that includes essential microbial nutrients not found in the FGD wastewater.

Petroleum Refineries

EOSi can help petroleum refineries develop compliance strategies in anticipation of regulatory changes expected to greatly reduce the amount of selenium that can be discharged to the environment. EOSi can conduct nutrient deficiency analyses and, if necessary, design a custom blend that includes essential microbial nutrients missing from the refinery wastewater.

MicroC® is also used for BOD augmentation to sustain the biomass during periods of low flows or loadings due to seasonal variations or maintenance shutdowns, and for establishing an acclimated biomass during the starting of new or upgraded biological treatment systems. EOSi can conduct nutrient deficiency analyses and, if necessary, design a custom treatment to sustain biomass during plant shutdown or startup.

Mining and Extraction

EOSi can help mining companies develop compliance strategies in anticipation of regulatory changes expected to greatly reduce the amount of selenium that can be discharged to the environment, and offers optimization services that maximize the treatment effectiveness of existing biological systems that remove selenium, nitrate and sulfate from mining wastewater.

Landfill Operators

EOSi can help landfill operators remove ammonia and other nitrogen compounds from leachate, applying MicroC® premium carbon sources to support microbial populations needed for biological nitrogen removal (BNR) converting nitrogen compounds into harmless nitrogen gas. Leachate from older landfills may lack sufficient biodegradable organic compounds to support the biomass needed for nitrification in the aerobic zone, so a supplemental carbon source such as MicroC® that provides readily available food and energy will be needed, regardless of landfill age.

MicroC® can be custom blended to provide other essential microbial nutrients, such as phosphorus, that may not be present in sufficient quantities in the leachate. EOSi refines the MicroC® program as needed to accommodate changing leachate characteristics in landfills over time.
