Virginia Wastewater Treatment Facility Case Study

Switching from using acetic acid to EOSi’s MicroC® 2000 premium carbon sources enable a Virginia wastewater treatment facility upgraded to achieve enhanced biological phosphorous removal objectives (EBPR) to achieve a significant feed rate reduction and an estimated savings of approximately 30%.

This 5 MGD facility discharges to the Potomac River Basin. The facility was recently upgraded to achieve Enhanced Nutrient Removal objectives of 4 mg/L of Total Nitrogen (TN) and 0.3 mg/L of Total Phosphorus (TP). The major components of the upgrade included two new 5 stage biological reactor trains, two new secondary clarifiers, new primary clarifiers, new tertiary denitrification filters, conversion of existing ditches to plug flow reactors, new solids processing equipment and chemical storage and feed equipment for 20% acetic acid and aluminum sulfate (alum).
