EOSi’s services and MicroC® supplemental carbon sources can help meat and poultry processors meet increasingly stringent requirements for removing nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. Nutrient pollution is a growing environmental concern, and regulatory agencies are increasingly requiring wastewater treatment plants to meet stricter discharge limits on nitrogen and phosphorus. The meat and poultry industry is particularly affected by these changes because processing plants produce relatively large volumes of wastewater with high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus.

Meat and poultry plants typically treat their wastewater for direct discharge, or pretreat the wastewater prior to discharging it to a POTW. Either way, processing plants without tertiary treatment to remove nutrients may need to invest in new wastewater treatment systems. Plants that already remove nitrogen and phosphorus may need to achieve lower discharge concentrations or loadings, either by optimizing operations or by upgrading/replacing the treatment systems. Biological treatment of nitrogen and phosphorus is often more cost-effective than physical or chemical treatment technologies, with the added benefit of converting the contaminants into harmless compounds. 

Wastewater flows and loadings at meat and poultry processing plants are highly variable, depending on processing and cleaning schedules, seasonal fluctuations, and maintenance periods. During times of low flows or loadings, biological treatment systems may need BOD augmentation to provide readily-available food and energy to sustain the microbial population until full-scale production resumes.
